Discover Frida Kahlo through self-portraiture, colour and paper flowers. Children paint a self-portrait, then build a three-dimensional flower crown onto it so that it stands off the board, and take the finished piece home. A 90-minute Sunday workshop for ages 8 to 12. All materials are provided and no previous art experience is needed.
To introduce children to art and help them make it theirs.
Each workshop begins with a different artist, then gives children the materials and guidance to respond in their own way. They create alongside other children in a group of no more than eight, with no previous art experience expected. To keep every session welcoming, well supervised and clearly organised for families:
A self-portrait with a flower crown built onto it.
Children look properly at their own face in a mirror, draw it large, and fill it with colour that owes nothing to real life. They then build a crown of tissue and paper flowers and add it to the portrait, so it stands off the board.
Kahlo returned to self-portraiture throughout her life. Her work gives children a starting point for looking closely, choosing colour freely and deciding how they want to represent themselves.
A short introduction to Frida Kahlo, her work and the idea behind the day’s project.
Mirror out, draw large, then fill it with colour. Nothing has to look like a photograph.
Build the flower crown and add it to the portrait, then look at what the group has made and prepare the piece to take home.
Bring clothes that can handle a little paint, a named water bottle, and a nut-free snack if you would like one. That is the whole list.

There is paint on this one, plus tissue and paper for the crown. Please dress your child in clothes that can take a mark. We cover the tables and keep water and cloths within reach.
